SMUG had a wonderful time tonight, and so did the congregation at Alexandra Baptist Church in Alexandra PEI, when they had their monthly Hymn Sing in January. Along with SMUG were the Retrofrets, a group of seven Smuggers who are enjoying playing at some of our local venues.Tonight was really their first appearance as The Retrofrets and we hope they will often perform with SMUG at concerts in the future. A string trio of Norma and Ann on violin and Darlene on bass were also on tap to lend some violin instrumental music to the evening in a selection that Pastor Dennis referred to as four strings by three.Pastor Dennis and his charming wife, Kathleen, treated us to a great lunch at the end of the service and we were encouraged by all present to make a return. As it was such a fun filled evening,and as Pastor Dennis is a stalwart member of SMUG we hope we might be invited at some time to make a return visit to Alexandra, a lovely country church on the south shore of Queens County, Prince Edward Island.
Word has just reached my ears that many Smuggers stayed after the 8 o'clock finish of service until 9:30 and had a great Jam with Ann on the piano. Sounds like another bunch of fun and some of us are very sorry we missed it.

Our first performance for 2012 happened last night at Andrews of Charlottetown. While SMUG has very often been a regular performer at the Stratford facility, it was our first at the Charlottetown home. While Hazel and Ann, as well as the "Yuletide Ukes", now renamed "The Retrofrets", have often entertained at the Charlottetown site, it was SMUG's first invitation. Almost everyone in the home came out for the performance and we were well received. Many of the residents made a point to come and give us thanks for our appearance. Both Ann's brother and mother-in-law were in the audience.

Hazel took over directing duties for a portion of the Traditional Section of our program. Her great smile and easy demeanor always engage an audience.

SMUG was the first Christmas program of the season at Beach Grove Home and the residents all joined in singing and having fun as we did our Christmas program with a few new upbeat selections like "I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas" and "Snoopy's Christmas" The "Hippo" song has been a favourite wherever we have performed this Christmas season.

This is Ann Campbell who is doing her second performance with SMUG. Ann is a regular solo performer at Beach Grove and a volunteer at Andrews of Stratford who has always helped with the Andrews Strummers at their practises and performances. Ann and her sister perform at ceilidhs and community homes around the Island.

Ron chats with Henry Coffin. Henry has always enjoyed SMUG from the front row as long as we have been performing at Beach Grove.

Deck The Halls At The Garden Home

For the second time in two weeks SMUG has been invited to The Garden Home; this time to offer some Christmas renditions on another Sunday afternoon in December. We were told by the chap who introduced us that we had been invited back by "popular demand" as the residents so much enjoyed our Summer Program two weeks ago. We gave them the whole hour of our Christmas program today and they loved it. Cookies and ginger ale came next and we had a full complement of SMUGGERS on deck for the performance and enjoyed having Ann Campbell join us for her first concert not taking place at Andrews of Stratford. "Please come back soon" were the departing words from many as we took our leave.We were pleased to have Martin, our professional photographer, video the whole performance. We hope that Martin might provide us with an opportunity to view it soon; possibly the Christmas party might be opportune.

THE STORY OF CHRISTMAS

SMUG were invited back for the second year in a row to provide some Christmas music entertainment for the First Baptist Church's Christmas dinner for the locals who live around the church area. They arrived at 5:50 Sunday afternoon and were treated to Christmas turkey dinner with large helpings and all the trimmings to set it off. We had a large turn-out and finding the stage pretty tight with SMUGGERS, chairs and music stands. The highlight was the generous meal served to all of the Smuggers, complete with strawberries and ice cream. It's not often we get an opportunity to play for our supper, but it's kind of nice and we offer our thanks to the people of First Baptist and to Bob and Darlene for having us invited back. It was a hard venue to take photos, but a few are attached.

Jean's Birthday at Garden Home

It was Jean's birthday. She sat in the front row, and as we were finishing up our program Hazel spotted a birthday tag attached to Jean, and we did it....we sang Happy Birthday to Jean!

It was SMUG's first Sunday performance at a nursing home and the very appreciative residents were out in full force; among them was Aunt Jessie, Derwyn Huestis, Tommy Knox and Guy Cameron, to name a few, who we talked to during the afternoon and seemed to be pleased to have Sunday entertainment.
SMUG did their final performance of the Summer 2011 program which has always been a big hit, especially with seniors in community homes. We did 20 selections in the hour-long performance which was graced by solos by Bob Acorn and Dennis Wells.
SMUG will be returning in two weeks to The Garden Home with a Christmas Program.

Early Christmas Gift for the director.

SMUG did a rousing and mighty performance at Whisperwood Villa in Charlottetown yesterday afternoon. It was our first visit to Whisperwood and we all hope we will be invited to return. The residents turned out in full force, clapped and sang along with everything we played, plus we had some of them playing the ukulele before the afternoon was over. This was a real highlight as we know Leah and Darlene are planning to teach a ukulele group there after Christmas and this was surely great advertisement for the January challenge. There were once again familiar faces in the gathering at Whisperwood and many of us had an opportunity to chat with many of the residents.We had been introduced after our customary "Smug Ukulele Band" by Kerry Trenholm, the assistant activity director, and Peggy Zielinski, the activity director was gracious in her thanks to us for being there for the first time. One of the other highlights, for me at least, was the "apple for the teacher" given to me by Joanne. A photo appears at the beginning of this blog!

SMUG played two anthems and several selections for this morning's service at beautiful St. John's Anglican Church in Milton PEI. The Rev. Kenneth Williams opened the service explaining that it was a day for the Anglican Women to conduct the service and five very lovely ladies did just that, with Allison Coles conducting SMUG. The service which saw many familiar faces in the congregation including all of the ladies who conducted the morning program. (I'm having trouble naming all of these ladies for certain, so better let it go at that!)

SMUG was back in full swing yesterday with the return of Hazel and Norma after a long absense during the summer months, as well as a new ukulele player, Maud Anschutz, who joined in with SMUG for the morning jam. Allison and Hazel shared in the directing chores for the morning and as usual coffee time was enjoyed by all with great sweets and snacks from Jane.

The highlight of the morning was a visit from a well-known journalist, Anne Thurlow, who writes for the BUZZ magazine and asked if she could come and do an article for the BUZZ about SMUG and the ukulele. NORTH MEETS SOUTH IN HISTORIC OCCASION

History was made today as SMUG celebrated their fourth annual Summer Picnic at the summer home of the director in beautiful Stanhope PEI.The annual event was graced by the director of YesterUkes, Dianne Sutton and her daughter, Jessica Sutton, all the way from Woodruff, South Carolina. Unfortunately the function was held up from the proposed starting time due to a GPS error in the car of the Suttons, when their GPS didn't recognize Stanhope as a place, but through the other wonder of another modern technology, the cell phone, we all got together shortly after 10 o'clock and following introductions the whole group spent an hour jamming on the ukulele and learned a new song,"JUST HANG LOOSE" soon to also be heard in South Carolina.
Dianne and David had become friends three years ago after a contact was made on the internet between YesterUkes and SMUG. During the time Dianne has helped SMUG as they have matured and moved into local stardom on stage and TV.
The morning was made complete when the burgers came from the barbecue accompanied by all the salads and sweets supplied by the group.Unfortunately about 10 of the SMUG group were uable to enjoy the picnic due to other summer and family commitments.
It should be noted that the accent that some of the YesterUkes were concerned Dianne might acquire while she was on PEI, won't probably happen, as we are all aware that she had arrived with a dandy, and that's another story!!Good thing the SMUG director recognized the name "Sutton". Dianne, it's been a joy to have had you and Jessica with us for today and we hope you will also enjoy the next four days on PEI as you make your way on our little Island and hopefully see why we that live here believe it to be so special. Good wishes from us SMUGGERS to all of your YESTERUKES.The past three years of being in touch has been an inspiration.

The circle got larger and larger as JustForFunners and Smuggers arrived for Allison and Linda's second annual Back 80 Summer Barbecue and Bonfire Party. The bonfire was blazing at 6 o'clock as we began to arrive and was still blazing away when some of us left around 9. We haven't heard as of this morning what time the jamming and partying broke up.Steve Rackham was once again the guest chef an again outdid himself with barbecued watermelon, asparagus, and bruschetta, not to mention the traditional hot dogs and innovative mussels. All of that was topped with cake and ice cream supplied by Maurice and Marie in a special pre-celebration of their upcoming 50th wedding anniversary. The evening was wisely started earlier this year so the jammers could still see the music for a while as they serenaded one another with wonderful love songs. Our thanks to Linda and Allison and their friends and family for making such a wonderful evening.....and can Allison ever call the weather!

It was a mini-celebration for Maurice and Marie as we helped celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary which will take place officially on Aug 18th. Congratulations Marie and Maurice.

Sunday, July 31, 2011 and SMUG took part in the morning service at Park Royal United Church. The program is attached below but the camera let us down and unfortunately no photos were taken. Suzanne Campbell was our guest soloist again this year at Park Royal and sang a lovely rendition of Hallelujah. The typical summer congregation joined in the singing of some of our prelude songs with enthusiasm when directed by the organist, Leslie Hiscott and student minister, Barbara Cairns.

Yesterday, July 27,2011, SMUG shared the spotlight with Andrews Strummers at Andrews of Stratford in a taping done by the CBC and hosted by Sara Fraser of CBC COMPASS. Sara and her cameraman, Mike, spent over an hour taping and interviewing some members of SMUG and Andrews Strummers. SMUG participated in the first of two church services for 2011 this morning at Central Queens United Church in Hunter River. The service was conducted by the Reverend Barbara Wagner, with music provided by the church organist, Christine
Belanger and SMUG who contributed 10 selections to the service. The highlight of the morning was a solo performance by Leah Brown; HOW GREAT THOU ART.

Wednesday morning and we're at Beach Grove Home for our final nursing home appearance before summer recess. They were all out, singing and dancing and just having a wonderful time. We were introduced by Karen Victor, the new activity director at Beach grove, and she and her staff participated with the residents during the program. It was mentioned that perhaps we might return again in the fall. Some of us were disappointed that our friend, Andy Northcott, was not able to be there, as Andy has been a long-time supporter of SMUG. Next time Andy.
Once again the highlight of the morning was the sea shanties directed by Hazel St. Amand, as well as the solos done by Bobby Acorn and Dennis Wells. Great job Hazel and guys....we need more of that.

Thursday May 27 and SMUG once again played for a great crowd at 501 Queen Street in Charlottetown. We presented a new "SUMMER" program which was partly put together by our guest conductor for the evening, Hazel St.Amand. Hazel added her wonderful voice to the group as she led us through six selections she had taught us over the past month. This was added to by another "first" for SMUG; Bobby Acorn sang a solo verse in "Peggy Gordon" and Ray Fralick gave us a verse of "The Mermaid". Our thanks to Hazel for bringing a fresh new approach to our performing. Very generous remarks were heard from those in the audience, and Grace MacIntosh , who schedules the entertainment at 501, invited SMUG to return for a Christmas show once again.

On Friday, SMUG joined forces with the ANDREWS STRUMMERS of Stratford and did an hour program where SMUG did a short program, followed by a great and uplifting set by ANDREWS STRUMMERS of STRATFORD. It was the second performance by the STRUMMERS when an apprearance by SMUG was made, only this time the Andrews group joined in with the SMUG songs and great participation during the whole show. Sharon took some wonderful photos as she always does, and it was great to have Ann Campbell as a part of the STRUMMERS. Ann is a volunteer at Andrews who plays the ukulele and everyone is so pleased to have her a big part of the STRUMMERS great effort.She joins Kendal Godkin, Dennis Wells and Darlene Acorn on Wednesday mornings as we all get together with the enthusiastic group from Andrews. Our hope that it will continue and that others might join this very illustrious and satisfied group of ukulele players. We were all so pleased to see and meet some of Joan Armstrong's family, who arrived on a flight to Charlottetown minutes before the performance began. We even had Joan's daughter join the group for several ukulele songs.What a thrill for Joan I'm sure.

Below are just some of the photos that Sharon was able to take on Friday, but because she was a part of the Andrews group, she was not able to make her usual panorama of those attending the performance, who as always, were so enthusiastic in their participation during the afternoon. The performance finished off with great tea and cookies as always, and supplied from the wonderful kitchen of Andrews.

A REALLY SMUG WEEKEND

A really SMUG weekend indeed. We did two performances and a jam on Saturday, getting ready for a month off in April, but back in full flight in May. Below are some photos and a bit of dialog about the good times we enjoyed playing for some very appreciative people,

We had a pretty busy weekend with a performance at LaPage Court in Hunter River, a regular Saturday morning Jam at the lodge on Saturday and a performance at 501 Queen Street tonight. Fingers are getting in good shape and we're starting to get the Spring Program down not too bad(If the director would only get his act together!)We must have been in their favour though, as they invited us back in May.Tonight was Denise Motard's birthday and her first performance with SMUG. I know she was pleased to have her first performance under her belt, especially on her __ birthday! We missed Harley tonight as we understand he went back to the hospital for a minor procedure which will see him back with us soon. Get well Harley, we miss you.

SMUG had been invited some time ago to perform in April at the LePage Court in Hunter River, but with our growing numbers, lack of enough room at the Court and so many going to be away in April we finally settled on a Friday in March at the common room at the Central Queens United Church next to LaPage Court. We were glad we went because Lois Lajeunesse, the organizer, and her friends provided a most warm atmosphere along with the best lunch we have had for some time. We always remark about our friends the YesterUkes in Laurens, South Carolina, in that everywhere they play they are treated to a great lunch or a sit down meal even. We had a wonderful afternoon highlighted by the appearance of Tim Waite, a local student on March break who provided those assembled with three great ukulele tunes on his own ukulele. Congratulations, Tim, keep up the good work.

SMUG has done yet another performance at Beach Grove Home for the fourth time. It was great to see so many of our friends there, who have returned to encourage us and bring out our best. The staff were involved as well, and it appeared that after an hour's performance, all were ready to head off to the noon time meal. They have invited us back in June and we all look forward to being there and providing a bit of SMUG excitement as they all participate and sing along with our antics.

EAST ROYALTY LIONS CLUB CEILIDH

Our Saturday Morning Ukulele Band were the guest performers last night at the Malcolm Darrach Community Center in East Royalty, an evening of many gifted local performers doing a monthly Ceilidh and sponsored by the East Royalty Lions Club. The evening was organized by and under the direction of Barbara Perry who was the emcee for the evening, told many great stories and also sang some wonderful songs. SMUG did an outstanding performance for twenty minutes topped off by rousing applause and a standing ovation. Barbara countered with an invitation to do a return performance in the near future. Our photographer was otherwise occupied during the performance, so thanks to Frank MacMillan for taking the photo.

STORMY DAY JAM

After a long stormy day yesterday and a blustery cold morning , a few die hards from SMUG turned out for coffee, cookies, muffins and cheese from the kitchen of Darlene and Bob Acorn, and even jammed for an hour and a half, mostly from Jim Beloff's new Ukulele Daily songbook. It was our first time using the new book which has been acquired by most of our members. The morning only saw 10 Smuggers out, but we had a ball trying new pieces we had never played before. The book might begin to take over at least half of our Saturday morning time limit of two hours and a half. Our thanks to Jim and Liz Beloff for creating this wonderful book, so useful to new and old ukulele jammers alike.

AN UNEXPECTED PLEASURE

On Thursday this week, February 24th, a panic email message from Sharon, the activity director at Andrews of Stratford came to us asking if we could provide some music for their monthly birthday party at Andrews. The booked performer came down with the flu and wasn't able to be there. A quick survey found eight free Smuggers who were more than willing to play and have some fun with the residents of Andrews. As always, Sharon took many wonderful pictures during the party, but room here hardly permits all to be downloaded. SMUG did about 20 numbers for the hour long party and discovered that music really can be made with only 6 ukuleles and a bass. We finished up the party with great birthday cupcakes served with some liquid refreshments.
SMUG is aware that The Andrews Strummers, the ukulele group from Andrews of Stratford, are ready to provide music for some of the future birthday parties as they come along monthly at Andrews. The group have been practicing diligently every week and have now grown to 12 members or more, and having a wonderful time.

Winter Concert Amid Construction

LINDA THANKING SMUG FOR THEIR WONDERFUL ENTERTAINMENT

SMUG returned to the Garden Home today amid a construction project that has been going on since last summer. Originally we thought tomorrow, February 24th, was the day we were to appear, but making contact the first of this week discovered that today was their day for us and tomorrow was their moving day. Consequently we were missing several Smuggers due to previous commitments but pulled it off in great style nevertheless, and with great pride amidst wonderful applause and clapping and singing during our performance. Linda Harding, the activity director, welcomed us heartily and following an hour of songs we were graciously treated to cookies and ginger ale. A wonderful time was had by all, certainly SMUG, and we promised to return later in the year.

A happy group of upbeat SMUGGGERS has begun another season of performances and first off at Andrews of Stratford amoung our friends the Andrews Strummers, most who attended our Friday afternoon performance along with many of Andrews' residents and friends. Activity director, Sharon Woods-Bryenton took gobs of photos, too many to reprint here, but great to have such a great variety to choose from. The one hour performance of 22 familiar songs finalzed at 3:15 with cookies and refreshments fresh from Andrews' kitchen served by Sharon and her volunteers.

SMUG held the third annual Christmas Bash this morning at the Masonic Lodge with 20 out of 21 Smuggers assembled for a two hour jam of Christmas songs and carols,interspersed of course, with coffee and cookies. After very appropriate words by Ron and a major presentation to the director,( see card below about David's Ukes) a draw was held for a SMUG licence plate; which found the lucky recipient happened to be our own Pastor Dennis Wells. Pastor Wells seemed pleased, and the director was certainly pleased with the kindness of the group.

The special highlight of the morning was the return of our dear friend,and tenor extraordinaire, as well as long time Smugger, Harley Ings, back after a lengthy illness. We are so pleased to have you back Harley and look forward to starting new programs including you for 2011.

The traditional meal of Greco Pizza arrived around 11:30 and with some added liquid refreshments we devoured pizza and chocolates before noon and were on our way, finishing up a year with double the presentations of 2009. We are also happy to have added four new Smuggers to our group, and hope more will join us in the coming year.

Yesterday, Andrews of Stratford held the annual Christmas party for the residents and their families, where all had a rare opportunity to hear and see Andrews Strummers in action. Accompanied by Andrews choir, under the direction of Betty Folland, and with Shirley Beck on piano, the choir rendered twelve Christmas songs to the delight of those attending.Solos were performed by Jean and Chuck MacKeen ,as well as Sterling Squarebriggs. We were also privileged to hear Chelsea Sanderson sing "O Holy Night" as well as perform an Irish Jig to "Christmas in Killarney". Edward Herring gave a trumpet solo " Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and the concert wound up with four great renditions by The Andrews Strummers.

Of course the highlite of the party was a brief visit from Santa Claus who brought along gifts for everyone. We were then treated with a welcome lunch of sandwiches and sweets from the kitchen of Andrews. The attendance at the Christmas Party grows each year as Activity director, Sharon Woods-Bryenton, continues to make life interesting for those who live at Andrews.

The Strummers have been playing together now for two months and it is amazing how much great music they can provide and add to the enjoyment of living at Andrews. We are privileged to have members of SMUG, Dennis Wells, Kendal Godkin, Darlene Acorn and Leah Ziegler on our teaching staff, who meet every week with the Andrews Strummers and jam in the activity room for about an hour. The ukulele is the easiest instrument in the world to play, as well as the most fun. Andrews Strummers are
a testimony to that fact. We have had as many as 12 residents out to jams over the past fall months.Ukuleles are being supplied by Andrews and Dennis Wells, but several of the Strummers have purchased their own personal ukulele. All residents are encouraged to turn up for the weekly jam on Wednesday mornings at 10:30.

SMUG played their final Christmas Concert of the season yesterday at Corrigan Home. The small community-care facility in the heart of Sherwood had asked several months ago if we would come and play for them, and we chose our Christmas program to do so. We discovered only a dining room available that would be large enough to accommodate SMUG and an audience, and only with the tables removed. However when we arrived there yesterday with 14 Smuggers, we soon discovered that "Small is Good", and we had a warm welcome by director Terry Howatt and her staff, along with most of the home's residents. As we went through our program there were many enthusiastic ladies and gentlemen who sang along and appreciated our effort with fine applause. Everyone agreed that a return to Corrigan Home would be in the making soon. One of the residents was kind enough to let us use her room adjacent to the dining room to put away our coats, cases and all of the necessary junk we seem to travel with.Very kind and warm words from many of the staff and residents who attended left everyone there with the warm feeling of Christmas.

There seems to be something special about SMUG performing at Beach Grove. Ellen Blair and all of the staff are there participating, the activity room is always full and everyone gets us in the mood to put in a little extra effort. We were well received today with 16 Smuggers out to bring some extra Christmas atmosphere to an already Christmas charged group. Ellen said she could feel the warm breezes in Hawaii as we worked our way through 22 Christmas songs and carols.Thanks to everyone there for their warm hospitality.

Our humble little group of SMUGGERS was invited to present some Christmas music during the monthly dinner held for the local neighbourhood folks at First Baptist Church in Charlottetown last evening at 5:30. It was a wonderfully large turn out of about 160 for the Turkey Dinner, and they fed another 17 of us SMUGGERS besides. A big production for the kitchen staff who seemed ready and took the whole thing in stride. In about an hour everyone ate their meal, had dessert and coffee or tea,sang along with SMUG and the crowd had dispersed and most of the tables were put away by the time we left. Many hands make light work, and what a happy group they were.

It was great for some of us to see many old friends among the workers and guests and a completely new experience for SMUG who occupied ALL of the stage. Again several queried if we had a CD out.....but alas...not yet. It has everyone thinking I would say. Indeed everyone was pleased with our performance and the way those assembled as well as the workers sang along, it was obvious our presence was enjoyed.

SMUG did their second Christmas performance at ANDREWS of STRATFORD on Thursday, Dec 2nd, for a large group of the residents there who clapped and sang and offered much praise to our group following the performance. We offered some 20 songs and carols during the one hour performance and alluded to the fact that the ANDREW'S STRUMMERS would be performing their Christmas program next Friday afternoon along with Andrew's Choir under the direction of Betty Folland. We are most appreciative to Activity Director, Sharon Woods-Bryenton, for introducing the group and taking a very large number of photos, too numerous to publish here. Sharon and the residence graciously provided cookies, tea and coffee following the performance.

This is what we have to put up with when we are trying to be serious and practice for our Christmas performances. All of those who preferred Auction Sales in Summerside are well behind in the Christmas program, but never mind, they have time to catch up.For your information , the Christmas Program is now etched on paper for 2010.

Garden Home Halloween Party

SMUG played again today at the Garden Home with an hour program that was well received by all of those attending. One lady was kind enough to rise on three occasions and say how much she appreciated our being there. Another was wanting to purchase some of our tapes, which of course we don't have, but she thought we should, and yet another wanted to know where we learned all of those old pieces that her mother and father used to sing! It was a wonderful afternoon and Linda Harding, the activity director, booked us for a return visit in February.If you look closely you can see the wonderful artwork pertaining to Halloween on the windows behind SMUG. Linda and Nancy Horne supplied "treats" to SMUG at the end of the performance. We all had fun and look forward, even more, towards our many up-coming performances.

SMUG created more 'tiny bubbles" this morning at Beach Grove, with a room filled with enthusiastic residents, many of whom we had played for last spring. Activity Director, Ellen Blair, welcomed SMUG and proceeded, along with Susan MacDonald(Official Bubble Maker) and Beverley Mason, one of the residents, to also entertain the large gathering, and make everyone feel "at home" and have a good time. The ANDREWS STRATFORD STRUMMERS had their debut today, at the monthly birthday and anniversary party for the residents. The Strummers excelled themselves as they provided beautiful music to their fellow residents in a collection of three heart-warming songs appropriate for the birthday celebrations of Helena, Dot, Chuck and George, along with anniversary good wishes for Mabel and Hoagie and Marion and Ken.

After opening remarks from activity director, Sharon, Cynthia Dunsford, local MLA for Stratford, brought greetings and congratulations to those being honoured. SMUG then performed several songs before making way for The ANDREWS STRATFORD STRUMMERS to do their stuff. The afternoon finished up with cake and refreshment fresh from Andrews' kitchen served by Sharon, Karen and Ann. A wonderful day was had by all.

Tonight, Allison and Linda invited Just For Fun and SMUG to their back 80 acres to enjoy a bonfire, roast marshmallows, eat a ton of mussels, barbecued asparagus, Bruschetta, and Marie's special Soiree cake with Ice cream. When Diane and I left around midnight(well, it seemed like midnight) the guitars and ukuleles were winding up for several more hours of fast-paced songs for campfires; which brought back many fond memories for many of us there. It's been years since most of us have partaken of singing around a campfire, and a great idea from the long and thoughtful head of Allison. All of our thanks too, to Steve Rackham and John Hooper, the excellent chefs for the evening.(How good does it get!)Marie says it will happen again next year with Allison's 2nd Annual Music Soiree. Yesterday SMUG was invited to Errol and Evelyn Monkley's lovely summer home, with a gorgeous view, in Donaldson for the weekly smugulele and coffee time. Twelve of us played on the deck for an hour until it got too hot, then we broke for coffee, tea and delicious biscuits and cookies, with all the trimmings, compliments of our hosts, Errol and Evelyn. After "snack and coffee time" we adjourned to the shade in the garden and spent another hour or so learning some new pieces for our repertoire.

And for sure the Little Light Shone as we performed our last appearance of the summer at Park Royal United Church in Charlottetown. SMUG performed 10 numbers before, during, and after the service, which was highlighted by Suzanne Campbell,( yes, a relation....our daughter)singing "THE HOLY CITY" accompanied in the choruses by SMUG. Suzanne said she was delighted to be asked to sing with SMUG, and SMUG was delighted to have her. Suzanne was brought up in Park Royal Church and has sung many solos there over the past 15 years, but she told her dad "This was special!"(That's the way I remember it) She had never seen SMUG perform before and her dad had never heard her sing The Holy City, a favourite of her grandfather Campbell, a tenor in many of the Summerside choirs when he was alive. Suzanne has a bachelor of music education from Dalhousie University and a master of music in vocal performance from The Boston Conservatory. She teaches voice in Charlottetown privately. The congregation seemed to enjoy singing along with SMUG as we played some well known spirituals before the service.The service was conducted by Barbara Cairns, student minister, and organist Leslie Hiscott.

BLIND AND CANNOT SEE, DEAF AND CANNOT HEAR

SMUG were at Central Queens United Church in Hunter River this morning, performing a total of 10 selections that seemed to delight the congregation. In the absense of the minister, The Reverend Barbara Wagner,the service was conducted by Mr Roland Easter with SMUG doing two anthem selections and the message brought by our own "Pastor" Maurice Steeves.Christine Belanger was the organist, assisted by Nancy Rackham. Maurice told the congregation the most wonderful story of how his father was both deaf and blind,his mother deaf, and what Louis Braille was eventually able to do for them to enable them to communicate. This heart-warming tale which began in the very early 1900's, tells of how his father was sent off to a school for the deaf in Saint John, where Maurice's mother and father met and eventually were married. Maurice explained Braille and how Louis Braille put it together to enable the world of blind people to read.There were samples for those assembled and Maurice explained the process and how a typewriter was eventually invented also to make putting Braille down on paper so much easier to process.The Braille passage that was sent around for the congregation to see said : "Count Your Blessings", one of the hymns sung in the morning service.

SMUG played at the Lions Club Hall in Winsloe last night, to a very packed house which was a benefit for local resident, David MacIntyre. David, who is going to Poland to receive treatment for MS. has suffered for many years. The entertainment began at 7: 30 featuring the JUST FOR FUN Band which gave way to many other local performers throughout the evening. Smug performed four numbers at 8:30 but there wasn't opportunity for the photographer to record the performance on film. It was wonderful to see the support in the community for David as he travels overseas to take this new treatment which everyone is hoping will provide him with relief.It was reported this morning by Allison Coles, one of the organizers,that over $22,000.00 was raised last night for this worthy effort.

Ron took a couple of photos this morning as we rehearsed for the two up-coming United Church performances on July 25th at Central Queens in Hunter River and Park Royal in Charlottetown on August 1st. I thought we should publish them. We also shot three videos of the three of the newest pieces we have in the program, but your editor couldn't get them to download to the blog; perhaps because they are too long. Too bad, because a great opportunity for us to see how we are performing these new challenges....and some are indeed challenges. I think we realize that now is the time to make additions and deletions.
Rehearsals are always great fun because everyone joins in with their thought process and opinion about how a song should be presented, and it makes for an interesting morning.(As expected, the director usually wins)
In preparing this program we are aware that Suzanne Campbell will be a soloist with us at Park Royal and whether SMUG should participate with her in her solo or not is an on-going challenge for the director.The next two rehearsals will tell the tale.
We have a real dandy program prepared and we are all looking forward to making the presentation. Possibly other congregations may request our program later in the summer or fall.

While Her Majesty, The Queen, and His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, graced the Canada Day celebrations in the nation's capital, Ottawa, SMUG performed in the enthusiastic Canada Day celebrations and parade in the streets of North Rustico, P.E.I.
With the advantage of a new trailer,and a beautiful July day, Allison Coles took SMUG to Rustico to perform for the citizens of that Acadian community on the Island's North Shore. Allison put together a lively program that will be well remembered by the huge turnout. The crowd showed their appreciation with clapping and singing along as we toured through the streets for an hour or so! Our trailer was only large enough to hold 10 Smuggers, but when our kitty grows we may purchase a trailer three times the size and add a sound system, so that all members of SMUG may ride along and even be heard, as they move along the streets of PEI in many of the annual community parades held each year.

Four Smuggers who are members of the Island Shrine Club,took their ukuleles on the Shriner's Airplane Float yesterday in the annual Montague Parade. They sang a selection of songs chosen for the day and sung continually from beginning to the end of the parade. Not knowing whether anyone could hear them or not, the four along with Malcom Paterson, another member from Montague, had a ball, and are planning another outing on Thusday, Canada Day, in Rustico.(Weather permitting of course!)

Father's Day was the theme for the June gathering in the activity room at Andrews of Stratford. Seats had to be brought in and they were lined out in the corridor to hear SMUG perform an hour program of oldies for the Young at Heart. While there were probably more Mothers than Fathers in attendance they were all enthusiastic and gave us a warm welcome following each selection.We put a ukulele on almost every table for them to try and get a feel for what it might be like to play a ukulele. The residence has acquired several ukuleles and residents are encouraged to purchase one for themselves and members of SMUG have offered to get them started playing for sing songs in the home and indeed elsewhere when they become more proficient. We might call them ASUE, (Andrews of Stratford Ukulele Ensemble)Want to join.....see Sharon.

SUMMER WRAP UP AT 501 QUEEN

While outside temperatures are unusually cool, SMUG found summer temperatures at 501 Queen Street last night along with a happy and singing audience. At one point we had two of the residents playing a ukulele and singing along with us. This was the last concert at 501 Queen for the summer and again we had to promise to return in the fall.It was our second performance this week....another first for the group.SMUG performed their newest repertoire for the residents which included, along with many new "oldies", a new rendition of "Prince Edward Island is Heaven To Me" and a rousing version of 'The Happy Wanderer" . As one of our members mentioned after the performance "We did well tonight and got a good "soaking" in the sauna". It was very warm in the activity room when we were there..... I wonder who pays for the heat!
Smug were glad to have Errol back with us at this performance after a scarey week at Saint John Hospital, but missed Harley who had an operation at the Queen E yesterday. We all wish Harley well and hope he is back with us soon.

Wednesday afternoon at the Garden Home

The Garden Home on North River Road was our newest venue in which to perform . Smug played for an hour to a most appreciative group as they sang and clapped to the old tunes we played for them. There were many of the residents known by the Smuggers so it became a bit of a reunion in some cases. By the time we began singing the whole activity room was filled, and we soon realized the staff have to start almost an hour before curtain time to get all of the residents in place. It's surprising how quickly an hour of singing slips by. So many of the residents dropped over to thank us for coming to play for them and shake our hands. Hearing a ukulele band was obviously a new experience for the people of the Garden Home. Linda Harding, the activity director, had warm words of thanks to us following the performance. We had been working with Linda for two or three months to try to find a suitable date to be at the Home. Leah's mother, Darlene's and my Aunt Jessie, enjoyed seeing her daughter and nephew and niece perform, and Leah's other mother, as she says, Elsie Musick from Kinross, was as proud as Aunt Jessie. It was like we did it just for them. Wonderful stuff!

GREAT APPEAL AT BEACH GROVE HOME

SMUG put on a wonderful performance this morning at Beach Grove Home on the beautiful North River. We say "wonderful" because that's what the residents and the Smuggers both said and "smug" was again in evidence following the performance. We were well received by Ellen Blair, activity director for the Home, and she and Susan MacDonald joined in and performed for the residents as well, who eventually filled the activity room. Ellen and Susan danced with some of the residents and wore leis as they blew bubbles during the singing of "Tiny Bubbles". Unfortunately the photographer didn't get a photo of all of the residents assembled. We have since discovered that Ellen might make a great addition to Smug as she is a renouned singer in her own right. We hope we might have another opportunity to return and play at Beach Grove again in the near future.

SMUG'S FIRST CHRISTMAS PARTY 2008

The questions have been asked, “Where did the name come from?”, “How did you get started”?
It all began in the winter of 2007 when my friend Ron Atkinson, who keeps me up-to-date on the interesting things on the internet, sent me that well known You Tube video of Jake Shimabukuro playing the Beatles “My Guitar Gently Weeps” on his beautiful Kamaka Tenor Ukulele. I got to thinking it would be nice to have a real good ukulele instead of the $20.00, 30 year- old one hanging on my wall, and maybe I would get around to playing it more often. My interest in Jake soon brought along The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, the Langley Ukulele Ensemble, James Hill and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole with his famous rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. This was too much enticement and a visit to David MacDonald at Sobers in May 2007 came up with a new Greg Bennett “Samick” concert ukulele which I quickly purchased after looking at a soprano they would have to order for me, and then might not be able to obtain I was told. However, it did arrive in July and I went to take a look and of course had to purchase it too. Shortly after, I got a call from Sobers asking if I was interested in taking ukulele lessons in September. In talking to Allison Coles and Leah Ziegler about the renewed interest in the ukulele, the “third wave” as they say, they both became interested in the idea of ukulele lessons. Allison, who is a member of the “Just For Fun” guitar group, bought my Greg Bennett concert and Leah acquired a Kay soprano and the class began in September under the direction of Jim Rumson, who Allison and I had known from the Masonic Lodge.( There were initially seven in Jim’s first class until Christmas, but the group got smaller during the next two semesters.) At a Masonic Lodge meeting in October 2007 I mentioned that Jim Rumson, who was not in attendance that night, was teaching some of us to play the ukulele. The remark brought the usual smiles , snickers and snide remarks from the sidelines, but following an invitation for anyone interested to chat with me, brought forth Ron Tallon and Maurice Steeves telling me they both had ukuleles at home. Wow….. something needed to be done about that.

In November some of us were decorating the Shriner’s float for the Christmas Parade one Saturday morning, and Allison, Maurice and I took along our ukuleles and had a get together after the decorating party. Several of the other Shriners there became interested and as a result, after Christmas those showing interest, along with Ron Tallon, went to take lessons with Jim in a new class. Unfortunately the class was short lived as there were time interruptions in their group and they couldn’t continue. In January 2008 we started going to the basement at the Lodge Hall on Saturday mornings and together learning to strum a few familiar songs. It got so we were meeting every Saturday morning and became known as the Saturday Morning Ukulele Group, from which the acronym SMUG became apparent.
Our numbers grew slowly at first from the initial 7 or 8, and has increased several times since to a point where as of this writing we are 19 committed ukulele players who look forward to the weekly Saturday morning jams along with coffee and cookies, and have become busy preparing for engagements at some local nursing homes and other community events as well as some churches in and around the Charlottetown area.

Since our first performance at the Potentate’s Annual Visitation in Charlottetown in October 2008, we have performed at several pancake breakfasts at the Lodge Hall, many different churchs, and several nursing homes and residences. Smug was honoured to be invited to perform at Fanningbank (Home of the Lieutenant-Governor) for a Royal Commonwealth Society Christmas party in December 2009, when one of our members, Errol Monkley, was president of that organization.

Worthy Grand Matron for NS and PEI Annual Visitation

Saturday May 8,2010 was the annual visitation of the Worthy Grand Matron for the Order of the Eastern Star to PEI. SMUG was invited to provide two spots of entertainment during the evening banquet which was hosted by Crystal Chapter of the Star in Charlottetown. The evening was also an opportunity for the Star to honour one of their long time members and Past Worthy Patron, Zeke Eaton. Smug performed two ten minute segments with a reduced number of 10 Smuggers. One of the waiters spoke to us on the way out of the banquet hall and said "You guys were awesome"...which made our evening.

It goes without saying, without the ukulele there would be no Smug Ukulele Band, or simply SMUG as we are now called. Back in the mid 70's Chalmers Doane,the innovative head of the music department for the Halifax city schools, introduced an ukulele program in those schools. Sometime thereafter, I think 1976, Mr. Doane brought a touring group of ukulele players to Charlottetown to participate in the Gold Cup and Saucer Parade. They had been featured on the CBC morning broadcast the morning of the parade and appeared on a float during the parade the same morning. When I saw the group playing I couldn't believe this wonderful fun sound was actually coming from these little toy guitars, nor could it have been the same music I had heard that morning on radio......but it was, and it blew me away. So much so, that a trip to Toombs Music Store that afternoon found me going home with an ukulele and a book to spend the weekend learning how to play chords(My wife and family were at Girl Guide Camp for the weekend).Since that time there has always been a ukulele hanging on the wall, in the boat, in the trunk of the car or at the cottage.Yes, I had several of these wonderful little instruments which I have learned are much more than a toy, and a joy to own and play anytime, anywhere. Anyone can learn to play an ukulele.

BIRTHDAY PARTY AT ANDREWS OF STRATFORD

Today SMUG were honoured to be invited to perform at the monthly birthday party at Andrews of Stratford for the ten April residents whose birthday was being celebrated. SMUG sang Happy Birthday to them all. We played several selections from our new performing program and it seems we have made a hit with the selections we have chosen, as we have heard nothing but praise for our performances.Folks are saying they appreciate our selection of songs we sing for them. (Something learned about who it is that we may be performing for).At one point we passed out 5 ukuleles to five in the audience and had them playing a one chord song in no time. We noted they were all reluctant to give the ukulele up following the afternoon program.
SMUG were fortunate to have the activity director, Sharon , willing to take photos of the afternoon party and as a result there are lots of photos to post for your enjoyment.

The Smuggers were back in fine form again tonight when they did their third performance of 2010.Missing from the front row was one of our most regulars, Harley. Harley is in hospital and had an operation today which we hope will see him back in his usual place as soon as possible.Get well quick Harley!
A very enthusiastic audience sang and clapped for an hour as Smug performed for the first time a wide selection of "oldies". We were told by one group following the performance "that's the stuff we like to hear" We have been invited back in June for another round of "oldies" There were so many familiar faces in the audience. We suggested an investment in a ukulele would see them playing with us the next time we were with them.
Yes, once again the Smuggers were more than a bit smug hearing the generous comments after we finished the encore which wasn't really expected. Almost all agreed T-shirts were the order of the day in June!

Herb MacDougall and Friends Performing

SMUG made their first performance of 2010 on Friday March 5th at the Stratford Plus 55 Winter Games. The actual games that were scheduled for the day had to be postponed due to high winds and blowing snow, but the concert that had been scheduled for Our Lady Of Assumption Church went away at 1 p.m., although some of the performers were unable to be there due to the weather.Flora Anne Whitty, Joan Creamer and Helen Elliott opened the program with Oh Canada and sang several numbers, followed by the wonderful voice of Gordon Worth. The Music Makers, led by Herb MacDougall and Friends followed and performed many familiar tunes to a fairly large audience who had assembled. The Flora Anne Whitty Choral group returned for a few more numbers followed by SMUG to wind up the two hour program. Our thanks to Bob Perry for taking the photos that are attached here, as well as Heather and Dunstan MacDonald for inviting us to perform in the concert.

SMUG gave their final performance of 2009 tonight at the Seniors' Residence at 501 Queen Street. Thirty to forty of the residents were out in force to welcome and sing along with SMUG as they performed their Christmas Special under the direction of Ron Tallon, one of the founders of Smug in 2007.Ron has put this Christmas program together over a two year period and how fitting it was that he was able to direct the performance.Not only that, he told stories and even jokes during the evening that had residents in stitches. The evening was put together by Smugger Leah Ziegler, as her mother is a resident at the home. Jessie MacPherson, Leah's mother, was thrilled to have SMUG visit and play for her fellow residents.A guest also during the performance was Bob Acorn's father, Bill, accompanied by Bob and Darlene's daughter Erin. They had the privilege of seeing Bob and Darlene and another daughter, Emily, perform with SMUG. Emily was a guest performer for the evening gala.
SMUG has had a wonderful and fulfilling year, 7 months really, where they have performed at many church and social functions in the Charlottetown Area. They look forward to 2010 with great anticipation.

SMUG had their second Annual Christmas Party today in The Carl Petersen Hall. During the festive jamming and feasting occasion, the Christmas Director of Music, Ronald Tallon, made a wonderful presentation to the Group's Official Editor, accompanied by wonderful and glowing words for his extreme abilities and continuous prowess in producing such beneficial articles on all occasions relating to and about SMUG. The Saturday Morning Smuggers gathering was concluded by a feasting and gorging on a large amount of Greco Pizza and Garlic Bread. Some fruity libations also accompanied the feasting and appropriate toasting took place during the Christmas luncheon.The editor responded to the year just past and how far SMUG has come in the past few months. Time now to buckle down and refine what we have learned and move to greater heights in 2010.

SMUG will conclude 2009 on Monday evening when they perform at 501 Queen Street, a large seniors' complex in Charlottetown. Ron Tallon will direct SMUG in a one hour Christmas extravaganza which he put together over the past two years.

After four consecutive Sunday morning church service performances, SMUG shifted into a newer gear by accepting an invitation to play at Fanningbank for the annual Christmas party of the Royal Commonwealth Society. The invitation was issued by Her Honour,the Lieutenant-Governor, Barbara Hagerman, through Smugger Errol Monkley, President of the Royal Commonwealth Society. Their Honours were present at the performance where SMUG did a program of Christmas music. One comment made following the 20 minute performance left us all smug again "Best entertainment yet for any of our Soirees." "Great toe tapping entertainment" On the occasion, SMUG presented themselves in their new "more" formal attire.

Today, Sunday November 22,2009, saw SMUG perform at yet another United Church. This time at Central Queens United in Hunter River and under the direction of Allison Coles. It was a marvelous occasion to perform in the Island's newest United Church which is a compilation of four United Churches in the Central Queens area.The Reverend Barbara Wagner conducted the service which was also on this occasion the annual Masonic Church Service for Prince of Wales Lodge in Wheatley River. Several masons read the scripture and Worshipful Brother George Mason gave the pastoral prayer and led in the Lord's Prayer. The organist was Christine Belanger assisted on piano by Nancy Rackham.

Just prior to the service the roads around Hunter River were closed to allow the Olympic Torch to pass by an enthusiastic crowd in downtown Hunter River with it's beautiful new main street.

SMUG's next performance will be at Fanningbank at the Christmas party for the Royal Commonwealth Society on December 3rd, when SMUG will introduce their more formal attire.

A Second Visit To Park Royal United Church

Once again SMUG had been invited to perform at the regular Sunday morning service at Park Royal United Church in Charlottetown, and obviously back by popular demand following their mid-summer performance in July. Most of the same selections were again chosen and again the ministerial assistant, Barbara Cairns, conducted the service. Leslie Hiscott was the choir director and it was his invitation that brought us back to Park Royal.We missed a few of our regular Smuggers but were delighted to have Mary Weeks, our newest Smugger, play with us for the first time.

Smug was honoured again today by being invited to lead the 10 a.m. Sunday morning service in song at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Charlottetown. The service was billed as "The Smug Service" . The Reverend Jay MacDonald conducted the service and the Eucharist. Smug performed 11 selections under the direction of Allison Coles; an exuberant congregation joined us in many. A brief reception was held in the fellowship hall following the service where many kind words were appreciated by the Smuggers present.Several mentioned that we should be the "Sunday Morning Ukulele Group". Smug has two more church services coming up, one at Park Royal United Church on November 15th and another at Central Queens United Church in Hunter River on November 22nd.(Both on Sunday!...Oh. well) Several other invitations have been put on hold for a time to let the Smuggers catch their breath and prepare for the Christmas season.

Smug provided the evening entertainment at The Potentate's Annual Reception and Banquet. Illustrious Sir Sam Nahas, Philae Potentate for 2009, made a presentation of flowers to our own Mary Lynn Ross after his address for the evening. He told members of the Island Shrine Club how much their work was appreciated by the members of Philae. Both Mary Lynn and her mother spoke and gave thanks to the Shriners for all of the help Mary Lynn has received from The Island Shrine Club and Philae over many years. Smug provided a fresh new program for the evening which resulted in a standing ovation and a curtain call ending with Jester Hairston's "Amen"

Smug performed today at St. John's Anglican Church in Milton, PEI. In the mind of this writer, it was our finest effort yet. With 15 Smuggers turning out to perform 10 selections, it proved once again that practice makes (almost) perfect. Smug was under the capable direction of Allison Coles, and The Reverend Evelyn Knorr performed the service. Her kind words towards Smug in her remarks, once again, made us feel just that way. She also added that we would be welcome to return again.
Unfortunately this performance was to be the last for Rob and Heidi Litke who are getting ready to perform at the Ukulele Ceilidh in Liverpool in late October after which they will be returning to Denver for the winter. We have enjoyed having them with us for the past month and hope next summer when they return to the Island they will join with us again. Smug's next performance will be the Potentate's Visit on October 10th, 2009.

New Beginnings

Smug was privileged today to have two visitors, who we hope will become regular members, at least for the spring,summer and fall seasons.They were Heidi and Ron Litke, summer residents on PEI from Denver, Colorado. Heidi plays a wonderful ukulele(s) and Rob a wonderful bass, which was a first for Smug, and gave the group a rich sound that suggested a bass has been needed for some time. Heidi and Rob treated Smug to a couple of duets after morning coffee and Joanne's coffee cake. The Smugulele that followed took a different turn with some impromptu jamming, which included the trying out of Heidi's Beansprout Banjo ukulele, and enriched with Rob's bass playing. Heidi is a partner in the Beansprout Company along with Aaron Keim. She has also directed the Denver Ukulele Orchestra for two years. Heidi and Rob have been regular attenders at the International Ukulele Ceilidh in Liverpool,Nova Scotia, since its inception and are looking forward to a return in October, having made many friends at the Ceilidh over the years.Heidi tracked down several members of Smug through the Ceilidh committee earlier this week. They are both Canadians from Ontario and discovered PEI during a summer golf excursion.Rob and Heidi moved to Denver in 1986 after completing their education where Heidi first worked as a Forest Ranger. Members of Smug who attended this morning's Smugulele were delighted to have them join in the fun and look forward to having them become members when on the Island. Smug are presently preparing for a performance at St. John's Anglican Church in Milton on Sept 20th.

The second annual Smugulele and barbecue took place today at the Campbell summer home in Stanhope, PEI. 14 Smuggers turned up and made the comment which was quoted at last weeks Smugulele, "Feed them and They Will Come", a true one for sure. The host promised more than one hamburger for each this year, and was true to his word. Barbecued hamburgers were supplemented by Salads Ziegler, and Pop and Chips Acorn, along with Deviled Eggs Steeves, and there were some molasses cookies there for coffee time as well. Barry did the barbecuing and Leah and Darlene(and Bob) did the work, which left nothing for David to do.(Smart Guy!) Vera had cut her finger during onion cutting, but it turned out not to need a band-aid after all.

Ron and David kept the singing going and Allison again graced the group with his handsome bass playing, until almost noon, when there was a call from the front room for food, so we had to stop and get cracking, er, cooking. It was a great Smugulele and comments were made about how much better we are sounding and keeping in time as well.The temperature in the cottage was 35 degrees when we left(that's 95 degrees F for our American friends), but too many mosquitos to sit outside so close to the trees.

We had received a DVD and a CD from Dianne Sutton, leader of YesterUkes from Laurens, South Carolina, just yesterday and everyone was anxious to hear another ukulele band. Dianne and many of the YesterUkes have written to us and passed along encouragement. They have proven to be very popular in their area with sometimes two or three performances weekly throughout the year. We all send them our good health wishes and a happy strumming. We're not sure where they get the energy to perform so often, but the CD and DVD are wonderful and as professional as they have become.

Everyone who could make it enjoyed the singing, playing and eating,and we realize we are still having fun in spite of the odd pressure that creeps in every so often.The kitchen was clean and we wrapped up at 1 p.m.

Smug made their first church appearance on July 26,2009, at Park Royal United Church . The program was made up of eight numbers which were performed before, during and after the service by 14 Smuggers to a fairly large congregation, considering it was in the summer.Many of the congregation are on holidays, including the minister and choir director. The former Park Royal choir director, now retired,Les Hiscott, invited Smug to help him with the music program, so some hymns were played and sung with organ accompaniment and some without. The service was conducted by the associate Barbara Cairns assisted with the reading of scripture by Marilyn Kennedy. Smug performed two selections for the anthem, Just a Closer Walk With Thee and I'll Fly away. The appreciative congregation gave wonderful applause which warmed the Smug hearts and left us a bit "smug" maybe.

Smug performed at Andrews of Stratford, in Stratford Prince Edward Island on Saturday, July 18th, 2009, for many of the residents . Only our second public performance, we are still getting our "sea legs" as the seafarers say, but enthusiastic none the less. Smug performed a short program consisting of seven selections, then passed out songsheets so the residents could sing along with the ukuleles. We were all treated to coffee and muffins at coffee-break time and moved out to the deck for a few more selections before closing the program.

It would be the hope of Smug and the activity director of Andrews that some of the residents might show some interest in playing in a small ukulele group this fall for their own enjoyment. Smug has expressed a willingness to participate in helping to make this happen.

YESTERUKES

Back in early April, Smug met up with a group of ukulele players from South Carolina on the internet (where else?).They are the YesterUkes, and have a very busy schedule of playing at many locations all around the State on an almost weekly basis. Since that time we have corresponded with several of the group and their leader, who has been very helpful to us and provided new songs and ideas as we get our feet wet at this ukulele thing. Many very positive comments and words of encouragement have come our way and we are most appreciative. When Smug first began it was our intention to have weekly jams and a bit of fellowship, but a couple of invitations to perform for others has given us a appetite to do more of this sort of thing. This is where YesterUkes have been so helpful and we thank them all for their support. No, we didn't copy the colour of their sweaters, it happened by accident!

STRING ALONG

A month ago, through the Internet again, we met up with another group in Dundas, Ontario, String Along. We find the leaders of the group, Norm and Elayne Ruplens, are retired school teachers who have taught ukulele in schools in their area for many years, and since retiring have continued to do so, as well as do weekly jams with a local group. Last week at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, they had a jam which was well attended. You will note in the photo, many of the players are playing Ohana ukuleles; Norm and Elayne are the Canadian dealers. Having ordered a new uke from them is how we got together and I find they have plans to attend the Ceilidh in Liverpool with many of us, and bring some of their group along as well.We look forward to getting to meet them and hopefully get a chance to see and play some Ohanas.

Today saw Smug perform along with the Park Royal United Church Breakfast Club Singers at the Prince Edward Home In Charlottetown. It was their first appearance to an audience other than Masons or Shriners and the accolades handed out were humbling to say the least. The Park Royal Singers are well seasoned performers with wonderful soloists, several piano players and a violin virtuso to boot. They make wonderful music which was much appreciated by the large crowd in attendance. Several of their number are also Smuggers. Jeff Cook, the activity director at the Prince Edward Home was very complimentary to Smug as it was the first time ukulele players had performed at the home. Smug did have a Saturday morning practice at Andrews of Stratford about a month ago, and although almost every resident turned out to see and hear the group, they also sang along with every tune they knew, and what was supposed to be a practice really turned into a two hour performance.

Hello, folks - and welcome to the blog for the Saturday Morning Ukulele Group, known colloquially as SMUG.

We're a group of friends who have fun and fellowship playing that greatest of all little instruments, the ukulele.

Under the direction of David C., our illustrious bandmaster, we plink and plunk our way through a plethora of tunes, both old and new.

Why do we do it? Playing the ukulele is a blast, and the basics of the instrument are easy - anyone can learn - but it offers the ability to advance to more complicated techniques. It's the perfect social instrument!

We're located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island . . . the capital of Canada's smallest province.
